For the third year running, MoneySense magazine has named Ottawa as Canada’s best place to live, citing its “cultural offerings” and “family-friendly lifestyle” as some of the nation’s capital’s best attributes.
MoneySense considered factors such as climate, ease of travel, affordable housing and population growth. It included 190 Canadian cities or towns with a population of at least 10,000 people and ranked them in 22 categories.
Canada’s biggest cities were also the bigger movers in the standings. Vancouver dropped to 56th place from 29th, largely due to the high cost of housing, the magazine said. Montreal dropped to 149th place from 123rd.
Toronto, on the other hand, jumped to 47th from 88th.
Regina, Red Deer, Alta., and Halifax each jumped into the top 10, thanks to factors such as low unemployment, high incomes and population growth.
Burlington, Ont., also jumped to the second spot thanks to a low crime rate, high incomes and mild weather.
The personal finance magazine also deemed Kingston, Ont., to be the best place to retire to in Canada. Strathcona County, Alta., was given the title of the best place to raise children and Wood Buffalo, Alta., was named the wealthiest place in Canada, due to workers at the oilsands.
