Inspect your home’s smoke alarms. It could be a matter of life and death. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half.
Facts & figures
- A 2008 survey found that 96% of U.S. households had at least one smoke alarm, yet in 2003-2006, no smoke alarms were present or none operated in two out of the five (41%) of the reported home fires.
- Almost two-thirds of reported home fire deaths in 2003-2006 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead.
When your garage starts to look more like a Sherwin Williams than a place to park a car, then it’s time to discard some old cans of paint. Keeping leftover paint for minor touch-ups is a good idea, but paint does not last forever. The lifespan of paint will vary by type and storage conditions, but if it’s more than a few years old, it should probably go. Some paints can be thrown away in the trash, but check the label and with your local government for disposal instructions before pitching any cans of paint in the garbage. Some communities have paint recycling programs and specific guidelines for disposing of paint. Check out our video to get ideas for organizing your garage!
A few ways to dispose of that old paint : GTA TORONTO AREA
“Just tell me how to get rid of it!” – Okay, so you’re living in Toronto and need to know how to dispose of that paint? If it’s still reusable to some extent you can take a step in the recycling direction by transporting your paint to a “Reuse Centre” at your local Household Hazardous Waste Depot Staff at these locations sorts out the paint and puts aside what is still usable, you can also pickup paint from these places to use in your future projects.
The “HHW Reuse Centres” are located at Bermondsey, Disco, Ingram and Scarborough Transfer Stations. Take a look at Toronto’s fantastic website to get the full scoop on the HHW depots – HHW Reuse Centres.
You can also take your leftover paint to (or pick up paint from) the paint exchange operating at your local Community Environment Day. These events, which run from April through September, are the local way to donate or reuse unwanted paints and household products.
Calm down, and take a deep breath. You didn’t kill your petunias. It’s normal for them and other summer annuals to begin withering this time of year. True to their name, annuals last only one season, and then they’re gone. To stay in contention for yard of the month, remove your annuals as they start to fade and consider replacing them with cool-season plants such as chrysanthemums, marigolds or ornamental cabbages. These plants are better adapted to cooler weather and will be the perfect fall accent for your home.
